What is the difference between a cylinder and rotary mower?

Whether you require a ride-on or a pedestrian mower, there are many options available, but the first decision to make is whether you want a cylinder or a rotary mower.  The type of mower that is right for the job will depend on the type of finish required and the condition of the grass. But what is the main difference?

Cylinder mowers have a series of blades twisted around a horizontal cylinder which cuts with a precision scissor like action against the bottom blade as the cylinder goes round. This type of mower gives an accurate cut and they are usually fitted with rollers to give those traditional English stripes. Cylinder mowers are suitable for level lawns and sports surfaces and achieve a beautiful high grade finish.

Rotary mowers have one very high speed rotating straight horizontal blade underneath. They are the most popular mowers in the UK. They are extremely versatile and cope with a wide range of conditions on most types of lawn, rougher grass areas and sloping banks. Pedestrian models are often fitted with a roller so you will still get a striped finish but the cut will not be as fine as with a cylinder mower.
